Frank Flick was born and raised in Germany and is now based in Sydney, Australia.
He has been working as Director of Photography since 2001, and has shot for high profile international clients such as L’oreal, Levi’s, Sony, Pepsi, Toyota, Hyundai, Etihad Airways, Panasonic, Samsung and many more. He has shot on all five continents for agencies from Australia, Asia, USA and Europe. Frank’s wide range of interest reflects in his work, embracing various genres and formats. His approach to each project is straight forward: “Find out from the Director what he wants, find out from the Producer what framework you have in terms of schedule and budget. With this information I start to prioritise. The reality is that different jobs do have different priorities. When budget and schedule are generous you have a large palette to choose from when it comes to executing the job. The palette shrinks when the job is lean. That does not necessarily mean you have to compromise the creative outcome. I look back at some jobs that only left room for a simple approach and in the end the creative outcome was the best for the given script.”
Frank’s background has helped him gain solid knowledge in most facets of film making. As an A.C. and later Camera Operator he has worked on big budget Hollywood films, such as THE MATRIX TRILOGY (2nd Unit on all 3 films)_SUPERMAN RETURNS (2nd Unit) _STEALTH_DEEP BLUE SEA_ANNA AND THE KING_DARK CITY. He also collaborated on hundreds of TVCs and smaller budget Australian Films. “Big budget films give you an insight into co-ordinating and planning on a large scale, working tightly to storyboards and into priorities when working with Stars. Small independent films teach you to be adaptive when it comes to scene coverage, lighting and working at a fast pace. Shooting TVCs disciplines you in creating shots that tell a story in 60 seconds or less and despite common perception nowadays also demand working fast and efficient.”
When Frank started shooting, it was mainly as 2nd Unit DP on car commercials or action based scripts. “Back then a helicopter was often budgeted for, so shooting aerials became a regular thing, and I still love doing it when the opportunity arises.”
In recent years Frank has found himself shooting many Beauty product TVCs, especially in the Asian region: “ Clients often use Stars to endorse these products. The celebrities have to be assured that my priority is to make them look their best. Each face is different and I enjoy the challenge in finding the right lens, angle and light to make them look great.”
